Today, we all live a very stressful and hectic life which put a lot of negative effects on our bodies. These negative effects can be reversed to some extent by adding a good anti-oxidant to the diet. One such common anti-oxidant is Vitamin C and I have already written about it (Best and easy ways to get vitamin C). In this post, I will talk about Kesar, also known as saffron, which is a spice derived from the flower of Crocus sativus. Kesar also has great anti-oxidant properties and we can get some essential elements from it. It has been used for centuries in various culinary and medicinal applications. Saffron has been associated with several positive effects on human health. 

 Saffron contains several active compounds, including crocin and crocetin, which possess strong antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect the body against oxidative stress and damage caused by harmful free radicals. Saffron has been traditionally used to improve mood and alleviate symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Some studies suggest that saffron may have antidepressant effects by modulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain. 


Saffron plays a role in promoting eye health. It contains carotenoids such as crocin, which are believed to have a protective effect on the retina and may help prevent age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Components of saffron, including crocin and safranal, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in studies.  Some studies have suggested that saffron may have anticancer properties. The spice has shown promising results in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and inducing apoptosis (cell death) in various types of cancer cells, including breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancer cells. However, more research is needed to fully understand its potential in cancer prevention and treatment. Preliminary research suggests that saffron may have beneficial effects on cognitive function and memory. It has been studied for its potential to enhance learning abilities, improve attention, and slow down age-related cognitive decline. 

Saffron has cardiovascular benefits by promoting healthy blood flow and reducing the risk of heart disease. It has been shown to have positive effects on lipid profiles, helping to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It's important to note that while saffron may offer potential health benefits, it should be used in moderation and as part of a balanced diet.
