India has grown in many sectors and we are slowly moving towards development in all walks of life. Education and awareness level among the people has increased many times in the recent past. Therefore, today we can hope for a better and safer surrounding for everyone in India including women. But sadly that is not true in India because our track record in women's safety is very poor. Crimes against women are so common that we constantly hear such news where a woman is targeted for being a female.
The Recent case of stalking from Chandigarh is another reminder that women are not safe even in the safest city in India. This case is about Varnika Kunda, a girl from Chandigarh, who was returning home alone late at night in her car when she was chased and harassed by two men who even tried to abduct her. However, it was her presence of mind that she called the police immediately and kept driving her car. The sad thing is that the one accused in Vikas Barala, son of a strong BJP leader Subhash Balra.
Though, the police acted fast in this case and rescued the girl on time. According to the statement of Varnika, anything could have happened to her if the police didn't act at the time. However, the police did a wrong thing by letting the go accused on bail on the same night. Many reports say that this might have happened because of the political stature of one of the accused's fathers. Even after four days of this incident, the police are still not sure about many things and they didn't arrest the accused which points fingers at the intentions of the police.
I believe that we can only progress and become a good nation when we start respecting our women. If such things keep on happening in India, then women will never feel safe. Today's Indian women are no way less than the men so they have all right to do anything and move out late in the night. It is the responsibility of the system to provide all necessary help and security to the women. I have always seen Chandigarh as a city where women's freedom is always protected but such an incident is a great shock for me.
It is very important to stop such incidences and punish the culprits so that other women can feel safe in India. Today in the major parts of India it is near to impossible for women to safely move out at night. I hope that justice will be done in this case and we will see more measures to make women safe at night.
