Sonu Nigam's Controversy over using or not using Loudspeakers at Religious Places

Sonu Nigam, Azaan, Tweets,

Sonu Nigam, a famous Indian singer, recently tweeted few tweets which created lots of turmoil in media and religious debates. Sonu Nigam tweeted that “God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India”, he further said that in another tweet that “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam.. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?”. Then, he further clarified in next tweet “I don't believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don't follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True?” that he is not just talking about any single religion.

Later he further clarified in his next tweets that he is not against any religious practices like Azaan or Arti, but he is against use of use of loudspeakers by such religious bodies which create noise pollution. His tweets become so famous that they gathered both positive and negative comments. Even he was served with a fatwa saying “one who will shave Sonu Nigam’s head will be given 10 lakh rupees. Sonu Nigam acted smartly and shaved his head himself, thus given end to fatwa controversy.

Here the main question which emerges in front of us that what he is saying is right or not? I believe that he is making genuine demands and such demands are made by people before. I have seen many people registering complaints against such religious bodies which make noise pollution. Even Supreme Court of India believes that such practices need to be stopped. However, the unwillingness of political class makes the situation out of control.

Already, there are many health studies which say that noise pollution is very high in India and Indian percentage of hearing disorders is much higher as compared to the world. Therefore, time has come when we should thing about this matter with an open mind. It is not only about the religious sound pollution alone but we should work hard to eliminate all kind of noise pollution which is threatening our health.
