Why people suffering from Depression are on the rise in India?

Rise, Depression, India,
Today, we see a deep concern for increasing numbers of people suffering from depression. Earlier, depression was not so common in India because of the peaceful and friendly environment we had. However, now the number of people suffering from depression is increasing rapidly in India.

Depression is not only associated with poor or unsuccessful people, but it is more common in successful and rich classes of society. Recently, I came to hear about the fight of famous Indian film actress Deepika Padukone with Depression. It was like a shock to me that so mature, successful, and talented actresses can suffer from Depression.

This is not a story in isolation, we are seeing a constant increase in depression cases in India and the speed of spread of Depression is alarming. According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization every 13th person is at risk of developing depression in India. Depression is increasing across the world and as per World Health Organization by 2020, it will become the second most deadly disease in the world.

Why Depression is increasing so fast? There are many reasons behind the increase in depression in India and one of the main reasons is a change in lifestyle. As a society, we are becoming more individual-oriented and therefore, we are seeing a high increase in individual ego. Today, it has become more important for people to think about themselves first than to think about others.

Due to this approach, people are becoming alone despite being successful. When we just think about ourselves and don't give proper attention to our family members, friends, and dear ones; then soon they start leaving us. In life, it is very important to invest in people, then to just collect money. When we have a few good people on our side, then we easily fight most of the stresses in life and remain away from diseases like depression.

The diseases like depression become more threatening and harmful when we don't have close relationships in life. When there are people who listen to our issues, understand our problems and motivate us to fight our problems; then we easily come out of difficult situations in life.

The second most common reason is the non-acceptance of Depression as a disease. Though, there is an increase in awareness about depression in India; however, still, a lot is required to be done. The number of Psychiatrists in India is very less and there are just 0.05 psychiatrists per 10,000 people in India.

We need to educate people that depression is a disease and it needs medical treatment.

Therefore, if you want to remain away from depression in life, then do invest in good people so that they can pull you out in your difficult time.
